57 A rusty pole
Everyone stayed silent. They were not stupid.
A gold coin was still a gold coin. Why would they waste it on something that had absolutely no use?
The first count passed. And then the second.
"Sold to the baron." the auctioneer nodded, and the item was taken away.
Jake would only get this after the auction was over, or after he was done bidding. But why would he end it here? He would keep staying in the auction until the bidding surpassed his capacity.
After a certain point, the bids could even reach a few hundreds of thousands of gold coins. That was not money that Jake had at the moment, although he could get it in the future.
"Onto the next item then." the auctioneer brightly said as she looked brightly to the side, where another item was brought in.
The auction went by, and each item that was brought interested Jake, but not enough for him to actually bid on. The Epic Items were good, but who would he buy them for? No one was worth this investment, and Myriad Arrows would get his Epic Grade Bow from the skill shop of his class.
As for the rest of his guild, equipping any of them with Epic Grade items right now would be extravagant.
Jake himself had the best equipment that the entire game had to offer. He didn't need to downgrade to some Epic Items.
And Kierch had to show his loyalty before Jake would invest any more into him. What Jake was looking for right now weren't the items that were being shown here.
He was waiting for the right one that could actually help him for what he had planned for later today.
"And now, we have a few spells in a grimoire from the legendary mage, Dullan. Some of these spells can be cast almost instantly, and they are all Tier Five grade spells! Your opponent will not be able to resist your attack." the woman on the stage smiled as she held an old looking book in her hand, bending forward to take the eyes elsewhere.
"The starting bid will be one hundred gold coins, each increment being twenty coins."
Jake stopped once again, surveying the room.
He didn't want to bid immediately and look desperate. If he looked desperate, then people would overbid and make him pay.
He waited.
A paddle went up, and the bidding was underway.
The moment the first paddle went up, the remaining ones started going up. This was an item that had significant interest.
Even the woman to Jake's left bidded on it, taking the bid to two hundred forty coins.
Jake decided that he would step in at this point, raising his paddle.
"Two hundred and sixty coins. Do I see two hundred eighty? Two hundred and eight to the Viscount on the left."
The price skyrocketed.
What was initially just a hundred gold coins rose to a price of four hundred in mere minutes.
"This is the problem with auctions. In a store, I can decrease the price and shave off the exorbitant rates by a few coins. The auction bloody manipulates the price." Jake cursed as he raised his paddle again.
As the price approached the high ceiling of five hundred gold coins, paddles started dropping one by one, and even Jake's neighbor stopped bidding.
But Jake did not stop. The grimoire could help him so much. He could use it later, and it was even Tier Five magic!
Mages were ranked based on Tiers, and every thirty levels was considered a Tier.
That meant that this magic could do significant damage to even level One hundred and Fifty NPCs. As for anyone below level one hundred, they were goners without a doubt.
If he had this in his hands, he would not have to fear anything when he went on the expeditions with the guild. The entire guild could band together and fight a large monster that was maybe in the high levels, but no player or guild could match someone in level one hundred.
That would need time. But with this item that probably only Jake could afford to buy, he was now capable of doing that.
But the bidding was not over yet.
Jake raised his paddle, raising the price to the exact amount of five hundred coins.
"The bidding has gone spectacularly, guests, but as the price is now five hundred gold coins, the increments will now be fifty gold coins each." the auctioneer said.
The other person who was contesting hesitated. This was the viscount who had bid at the very beginning, and was still in the game.
Adding fifty gold coins was something to consider. Barons and Viscounts weren't rich, and they didn't have lands. Only Marquesses were given lands upon reaching nobility.
Gritting his teeth, the Viscount raised his paddle. Jake was surprised.
"Why the hell is an NPC trying to get a grimoire this badly? What would he gain from it? But the price is getting out of hand. It's this or nothing." Jake thought as he raised his paddle.
The price was now six hundred, a whole six times what it was originally.
If the Viscount raised it, then Jake would have to drop it. He needed to save his money. A guild cost a lot of money, after all.
"Please show me some face, Baron. This is an item that I need a lot." the viscount said, breaking the silence of the room, and rose his paddle.
Jake smiled as he looked up at the Viscount.
"I will show you some face, Viscount. The grimoire is yours." Jake said as he put down his paddle, signaling his willingness to retreat.
"Going once. Going twice. Sold." the mallet went down, and the viscount finally revealed a smile.
"Thank you for this. I will remember it." the Viscount smiled and looked at Jake.
"At least I got something out of this." Jake shrugged.
