Vampire Nightlife

178 Putting Faith In Others

It wasn't a bright plan in the first place, Lukas decided.

When Theodore came with the van and caused wreckage in the Carmilla House… it was doomed to fail right from the start.

Then again, sneaking out when you already entered the mouth of a snake was also a fool's errand.

However, not all hope was lost in Lukas' eyes.

There had still got to be a way for things to work out for them and that was all he cared about.

Last night had been a disaster and trying to do damage-control was laughable at least, but the Carmilla House Overlord spoke and the people listened.

The Vardoken siblings, Theodore and even Lukas and Chaerin were given their own rooms to stay for the night and that was also a terror in the making… at least for Lukas.

He didn't get a wink of sleep at all.

Luckily, Vampires didn't need much sleep in the first place but going through everything was a pain in his head.

'Aurelius House was bullied into agreeing with the rest of the Houses, and while I can't help but sympathize with them… it doesn't mean that they're the right candidates in making sure that all of my friends are okay and that we get to Lily safe and unharmed.'

'That woman was so sickeningly devious.' Drusilla echoed in Lukas' head.

'I mean, aren't Vampires supposed to like use their Charm to deceit humans and other Vampires?' Lukas said as he prepared to go to the dining hall.

When he opened a door, there was a Vampire servant waiting for him already. It almost seemed like they were making sure that nobody ran away.

"Would you allow me to escort you to the dining hall, sir?' a servant asked.

"Yes, please thank you." Lukas said as he paid attention back to Drusilla.

'Ugh. While it is true, it doesn't mean that I'm supposed to like it.'

'Heh. Haven't you said that Vampires all pretended to smile with each other and betrayed each other in the back? Looks like to me that you're a pot meeting and calling someone kettle.'

'What exactly are you going on about, Vampire-man?' Drusilla intoned. 'That human phrase is clearly going to out you someday to these people.'

'I don't think it hasn't… which actually makes me want to ask if these folks really uh, worked with humans or whatever. If it was such a real thing, then why would they bother hiding it?'

'Surely you can think of an answer for yourself.' Drusilla said, almost as if she had scrunched up her face. 'What would you think if these people who were supposed to be your blood supply turn out to be someone who you collaborate and work with? That is certainly unacceptable! I would never stand for it.'

'Yeah, I remember everyone from Theodore to even Stacy not thinking about Vampires and humans intermingling… so maybe the Aurelius Overlord got it all wrong. But then who would these people be working with and still be considered as their enemies?'

'Lycans.' Drusilla said, a distaste in her voice. 'If these Vampires were working with them, then I can't help but accept that my kind has really sunk low. We held ourselves with much more pride before but to reduce ourselves to working by their side…'

'Well, I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing.' Lukas thought. 'I just don't like that Carmilla Overlord. I don't like it when people try to use cooperation as a way to get their way.'

'Hah! Pot meets kettle!' Drusilla said.

'What?' Lukas frowned.

'You become an example of hypocrisy as well by saying that. You are no stranger to using flowery words to get what you want, using your humor and smiles for things to get your way. I suppose it is rattling when someone uses it too.'

'Hey! I'm actually decent… I'm using it for the greater good. To save Lily, my girlfriend and that's what the others want as well, so that's why they agree.'

'Oh, really?' Drusilla raised a brow. 'Do not tell me that your girlfriend Chaerin wouldn't enjoy seeing as Lily vanish? And why would these two Vardokens who were mistreated by this Lux city of yours choose to wholeheartedly help you in this mission of yours?'

'You…' Lukas frowned.

'Ah, ah. I've allowed you to escape from conversations before, but now is not really the time to evade them. You have goals to save your girlfriend which is all good, I suppose… but there has to be something more beyond it. While I am aware that there is a degradation of talent in the course of time, perhaps there is some relic of the past that might assist me and you.'

'Sorry, what?' Lukas scratched at his ear. 'Is the great and mighty Drusilla of the Sanguise House trying to ask me for help in setting her free from this cursed dagger of hers?'

'Mock me one more time and I'll refuse to show up when you most need it.' Drusilla said. 'You've released that little Dream Eater and I'm sure that she's not entirely motivated to help you, and yet you continue to seal me.'

Lukas let out a sigh and smiled as he glanced around the hallway and took in the various portraits of the notable Carmilla House individuals. One of them portrayed the current Overlord at the height of her beauty and position it seemed… but that wasn't what he was looking for.

Rhea really was going missing, and though she couldn't stay away from him permanently, she was at least able to go from one place to another.

'Yeah, I get that she was frustrated with me from last night. She wanted blood from me, and I guess it's got to do with that mutation that happened ever since I gave her my blood.'

'You've somehow managed to get a blood servant that's not even with a physical form.' Drusilla begrudgedly said. 'When you're surely not preoccupied with all these things that you're doing… you ought to really know who you are, Vampire-pretender.'

'I know, I know. Don't presume that this mystery doesn't bother me… but there are other things of importance too.' Lukas arrived at the dining hall and saw the people who'd been waiting for him.
