Maynild’s Journey(3)

A few minutes later, the southern gate of Fort Bunuo opened.

The remaining White Lion soldiers in the city began to retreat. The Devils’ commander, the Longhorn Devil, immediately noticed this. It certainly could not tolerate these people who had caused it great trouble to escape.

It let out a long cry and the Devil Army immediately surged towards the south gate. It led the army itself, ready to crush these little insects.

However, it rushed down the city wall and went through a few winding alleys, coming to the only square in the city. Here, it saw humans in battle array. It was not just the knights of the White Lion Legion; there were ragged men and even children.

The Longhorn Devil suddenly realized something was wrong.

Sherlock stood among the crowd and raised his sword defiantly.

“I know you’re listening. Fire at me, Victory… Fire at me, Victory!”

The voice that came out of the Magic Crystal seemed a little distorted, but the determination it contained could not be hidden. The mage who passed the order was silent for a moment, before looking back at the count behind him.

He was dressed in a long coat and was somewhat pale. Tiredness was written across his face. Count Janilasu closed his eyes. He rubbed his forehead as if he had hardened his resolve before replying.

“The Devils’ commander is there. Fire at him.”

“But Count…… “

“I will take all the responsibility,” the count replied calmly.

If people dared to give up their lives, what excuse do I have for not giving up my own reputation?

The earth trembled, and blinding golden light had covered the entire Fort Bunuo. It was like a sea of fire. Owen watched as the lower-ranked Devils, which had lost their command, fled in the midst of the fire. He watched his fellow men turn into ashes in the midst of explosions. He watched all of these as tears brimmed in his eyes.

He straightened Marquis Balta’s corpse and then raised the tattered flag of Aouine above his head.

That action of his was seemingly sacred.

……

The two flags reappeared on the battlefield.

It was a glimpse of hope that had been exchanged for the blood of countless people. It ignited a fire in everyone’s hearts and gave them faith. Even those on The Victory and Aouine’s naval cadets could not help but close their eyes.

Archbishop Wood watched the scene in silence.

Youla could not see it, but the cheers of the crowd outside had reached her ears. She was not from Aouine, but a smile appeared on her face nonetheless.

“Come on, Aouine.”

But Carglise ,who was fighting on the frontal battlefield of the village of Medao, suddenly stopped.

What was going on?

He and all the young men of Trentheim felt something strange. They were not the only ones; the entire White Lion Legion felt their hearts throbbing in terror.

In front of them were unstoppable Minotaurs. The White Lion Legion was crumbling in a series of retreats under the simultaneous attacks of Medusa and the Cave Lizardmen Archers. They had in fact lost most of their previous gains.

Everything was going down the drain.

However, a flag came into their vision.Iit was a flag that seemed to be woven not of fabric but of gold. The flag unfurled amidst the heavy rain and the White Lion came back to life.

It was Freya.

The female knight made her way past everyone with the flag in one hand and the Lionheart Sword in another, ready to face the fearsome monsters of Jorgendy Ridge.

At that moment, Scarlet was just beside her while the White Lion Legion was behind her.

On her left were the Highlander, while on her right was the White Lion.

She seemed unstoppable as she moved forward.

It was as if history had been rewritten at that moment.

Scenes from seven centuries ago were recreated here seven centuries later.

The only difference was that their enemies had changed from the Kirrlutz to the Devils. The subtle coincidence of history was so shocking it seemed to make the air vibrate slightly. Everyone sensed this feeling that seemingly felt like it was from fate.

Freya raised her longsword.

“White Lion Legion, at my command, commence assault forward. Even if we die, we’ll die on this path of attack. Perhaps, one day in the future, the White Lion will be reborn from the ashes instead of being extinguished forever.”

The female knight’s voice could be heard clearly in the rain. Her promise was as if it were an oath, just as the late ruler, Erik, had made before the Lionheart Sword. At that moment, a miracle happened, and the Royal Cavalry Academy’s students were surprised to see the White Lion Legion’s armor light up slightly.

Then, a layer of faint golden light seemed to descend from the sky. It then surrounded every soldier of the White Lion Legion and finally formed a golden mark.

If Brendel was here, he would probably recognize that this was the final layer of marks on the White Lion’s armor.

It was also the source of that legendary ability of the White Lion Legion that he and Master Bosley had been unable to research.

The Mark of the Lion would give the wearer the effect of valor. The army that wore it will no longer be afraid, would always be in high spirits, and would not fall into panic in any situation.

It was as if the Lion’s spirit had come to life.

Carglise raised his head, and he suddenly felt that the numerous eyes in the sky that were always watching over this place seemed to have disappeared. It was as if the ancient ruler had departed. However, Aouine already had its own new successor.

All the remaining soldiers of the White Lion Legion roared and attacked the enemy that vastly outnumbered them. Fear and uncertainty were currently not a hindrance in their minds, but rather, they were the motivation to move forward to overcome all of this.

While they might eventually be defeated, the legend of Aouine and the White Lion would live on.

It would never be erased.

It was a pity that the Minotaurs from Jorgendy Ridge did not have the ability to think, or they would have been trembling as they faced such an army that had nothing to lose, but the only thing they could do in the face of these unrelenting humans was to raise their giant axes.

They might not quite understand how these humans could accept defeat so readily, for survival was the only glory to the creatures of the dark underworld.

The Medusas behind the Minotaurs raised their bows as well.

The two armies collided into each other with a bang.

It was a matter of courage, honor, and simply the desire to survive. The stalemate with the Minotaurs was briefly achieved at great sacrifice, but at the cost of palpable loss.

Freya was at the forefront, her sword was as solid as if it could break through all the obstacles.

Scarlet watched the female knight from the back with some admiration, but it was not this unyielding courage that made her heart beat wildly; it was the unyielding conviction. It was the first time she realized that one could be so determined to the point where they could fight independently without relying on others.

It was something that touched her heart, as she had thought that only the lord was capable of doing so.

But it turned out that even a girl could do it too.

The sight of Freya’s back at that moment felt like a deeply-engraved memory. It was just a mere moment, but it was already enough to deeply imprint itself in her heart.

She was suddenly somewhat willing to pick up her sword for Freya, and to help her open up a path by her side.

……

“Can you win?”

“I’m afraid not.”

Wood, Makarov the cunning fox, and Oberwei were speaking briefly. The Archbishop of the Kirrlutz stood up and the servants immediately pulled his robes on.

“Lord Archbishop?”

“The Aouines are fighting for their fate, and to be blunt, I’ll have to gamble for my fate and my faith,” Wood sighed and replied. “It shames me and disgraces the King of the Holy Cathedral of Fire just to be here watching.”

“But my Lord, the Devils should have kept a hand in the game, and if you make your move now…”

“Now is not the time to think about that,” Wood replied bluntly.

Right at that moment, the door to the cabin suddenly opened. Everyone could not help but frown, Had the people below been so panicked that they had forgotten even basic etiquette?

They looked back, but they saw the somewhat odd face of Count Violet.

“They’re here!”

“Who?”

Scarlet shot down a Minotaur, before suddenly turning back. She grabbed Freya in front of her and furrowed her pretty eyebrows a little.

“Scarlet?”

“There’s something.”

The ground was trembling slightly, and soon, everyone felt such a subtle change. The White Lion Legion soldiers at the back were the first to turn back.

It was still a long time before dawn.

But there was a line of silver light on the southern horizon.

It was not dawn.

Rather, it was a line of undulating, continuous silver armor. Countless horsemen were galloping over the hills, holding their flags high and whirling like the ocean, singing a hymn from the time of the Holy War.

“It’s the cavalry?!”

“Where’s this cavalry from?”

“There are still armies like this in the South?”

Freya frowned. She saw a flag leading this army as they marched forward, singing songs she had never heard before as if they were an army that had just marched out of a myth.

‘The trumpet sounds again, may the clans still not forget the sacred covenant.’

‘Dark plumes cover the sky, but the silvery dawn still rises.’

‘Ancient oaths reverberate through the land, armor still new, swords still ringing.’

‘The Holy One came in response to the oracle, the flames of battle blazing again.’

A sacred lily emblem that was pure as silver shone brightly on the battle flag.

Silver Elves.

They had returned to the land once again……
