I Hate Systems

69 Beginnings of the Secret Society (Part 7)

'It's really amazing.' Compass Carburettor thought, 'I have caused the death of more than three thousand people. And, I don't even feel a hint of guilt. Is it simply because they were already scum worse than animals?'

He then recalled some of the incidents from his childhood, ones where he had taken advantage of innocent people and caused them suffering, immediately feeling pangs of guilt that caused him to sweat as his breathing grew ragged.

He became depressed, clenching his hand into a fist tightly as he wished to beat himself into a pulp for having done such a thing. Now that he suffered from the guilt, Compass Carburettor was relieved, 'Thankfully, I didn't turn into a monster. Rather, as long as I feel this sense of guilt, I am human. I can endure it. As for those animals that harm the innocents, I don't need to consider them as humans.'

He propped his spirit up, accompanying Fealta as they arrived before a certain house. The house looked nothing unique, but this was by far the most important location of the underground organisation.

This was where the talented engineer's family was kept captive. And, there was a door within the house that led into an underground workshop where the engineer and his assistants lived. They worked on producing Armaments and Puppets for the underground organisation.

"Let's be careful." Compass Carburettor muttered, motioning for Fealta to walk alongside him as they knocked on the door, hearing some sounds from within. Soon, a middle-aged lady opened the door, asking in puzzlement, "Yes?"

She was confused by the fact that no guest had ever arrived at their doorstep. And, for those involved with the underground, they never knocked. So, she was indeed puzzled by the reason why the unfamiliar lady had knocked on her door.

After all, their house was located smack in the middle of the residential district. There was nothing worth visiting here. Even for the tourists/visitors asking for directions to the house of those they wished to see, they would have done it around the corner of the residential district upon entering it.

So, there was zero chance any stranger would ever stumble upon their house, unless they were aiming for it in the first place.

Compass Carburettor smiled coyly, asking with a cheerful tone, "Do you wish to buy our bug spray? We will also demonstrate a free service where we'll eradicate all the pests in your house. We're professionals in the industry."

"We don't have any pests in our house though," The middle-aged lady said, intending to close the door shut when Compass Carburettor leaned on it, using his body weight to prevent the door from being closed.

He then slowly peeked into the house, "But, I see quite a few pests though. I mean, look at them. See how huge they had become? Your health would deteriorate if you leave them be for any longer."

If she still failed to understand what was happening, she would have been an idiot. As an engineer's wife that had been living under troubled circumstances every day for the past few years, she was rather smart.

She had even been planning for a method to free her family and escape to another city. For her plan to fruition without alerting the underground, she still needed one more year. And now that a chance presented itself before her, she would be a fool to not take it.

But, she was cautious, wondering if it was something the underground had prepared to test her after having discovered some traces of her activities. Even otherwise, she knew the underground's power, realising that the people in her house were just guards.

The moment she escaped, the entire personnel of the underground would be on their tails. After all, her husband was the most valued asset of the underground. So, she couldn't simply risk it without any guarantees.

So, she smiled in return, intending to safely probe the other party, "We don't have any pests in our house, but I would love to witness your services. Maybe in the future, we would need to use your services."

Feeling the Mental Energy stream landing on him from the middle-aged lady, Compass Carburettor understood her choice on the matter, smiling as he said, "Of course, please leave it to us. We've already cleaned the pests in many locations in the city today. Our services are stellar."

His words caused the middle-aged lady to shudder as she looked at him in suspicion. But, Compass Carburettor didn't explain any further, entering the house as he shouted, "Everyone! Our cleaning services would be doing some work now. Please bear with us for the time being."

"Who are you?" Prompted by his shout, the guards stationed in the house were alerted. There were four of them in total as they walked into the living room, gazing at the middle-aged lady—the one Compass Carburettor had disguised as—as they frowned.

"We are part of the cleaning services." The middle-aged lady smiled, pointing at the four guards as she said, "And, we are rather great at exterminating pests."

The guards were alarmed as they reacted, suddenly stunned when one of them collapsed to the ground. And right as they flinched to look at their fallen comrade, another fell.

As for the final two, they hurriedly condensed their energy blades—a regular sword—when Fealta pierced them deftly using her long sword, attacking twice within a second, accurately piercing their hearts both times.

Shocked, they collapsed to the ground, dying in the process.

"Aah! What have you done? The underground wouldn't leave us alone now!" The middle-aged lady, the engineer's wife screamed in shock, slumping to the ground as her face paled, "You shouldn't have done that. This would just anger them."

"Anger who?" Compass Carburettor laughed, "What underground? Who will come after you?"

"There's no underground in Peckle City." He smiled, noticing the middle-aged lady's expression turn from shock to surprise before becoming stupefied.

He then said it directly, "Relax, we already eradicated them all before arriving here. This is the last place. Now, the only ones remaining are within the workshop below."

He smiled, gently propping up the middle-aged lady, motioning for her to lead the way, "Let's proceed to the final location, shall we?"
