217 Persuading the Old General

Brigadier General Antonio felt remorseful for the death of his men. He considered them as his family, but because of his foolish choice, many of them died. If he could turn back time, he would have rejected Senator Louie's request. However, it was too late to back out now. He didn't want his men's sacrifice to be in vain so he could only grit his teeth and see the end result of his decision.

The old general gathered his remaining subordinates. He managed to regroup with seven of his men. "We have to leave now! Protect the senator!" The old general muttered in a grim voice.

The soldiers nodded their heads. "Yes, sir!"

The gunshots intensified as more enemy forces entered. Luckily for them, a few brave soldiers blocked them off which earned them enough time to exit through the back gate.

Suddenly, the soldier leading the group halted. "What are you doing!?" Senator Louie screamed in a hoarse voice. His face was disheveled and there was no semblance of the cultured official he once before.

General Antonio and the soldiers stared at the enemy forces who were aiming their guns at them. They knew that they could no longer escape.

"Put your weapons down!"

The soldiers turned their gazes towards Brigadier General Antonio. They were not afraid to die if the old general commands it.

Looking at the resolute faces of his subordinates, the old general sighed in his heart. He wanted to surrender, but before he could even say anything…

"Stop! Do you guys know who I am?!" Senator Louie stepped forward. He was nervous, but he had to do everything to make sure that he would live. The thought of dying made his heart turn cold. He was afraid of death.

"Put down your weapons or we will shoot! You have five seconds to consider! 5! 4!"

Senator Louie's face fell when he realized that the other party didn't care about his position.

"3! 2!-"

"Put down your weapons!" General Antonio shouted at his men. He then threw his gun on the floor and raised his hands in midair.

Upon hearing the old general's words, his subordinates quickly threw down their weapons.

Senator Louie's eyes widened and he couldn't help but stare at the old general in disbelief. "You!"

Senator Louie walked towards the old general and raised his hand as if he were going to slap him in the face.

Bang!

A gunshot rang out and it was followed by Senator Louie's pig-like screams.

"Ahhh!!! I'm shot! He shot me! Ahhh!!" Tears covered his face as he fell to the ground. He grabbed his bleeding leg and tried to bandage it using his shirt, but the pain made him scream.

"Stand down!" A cold voice echoed.

General Antonio signaled his men not to make a move. They would only die if they showed signs of resistance.

A man who seemed to be the leader of the enemy force slowly walked towards the old general. Two armed soldiers followed him as they eyed the old general and his subordinates.

The old general's subordinates immediately walked in front while warily looking at the opposing party. "What do you want?"

Conrad ignored them and stared at the old general. "General, someone wishes to speak with you. Please follow me." He said in a calm voice.

Hearing this, the old general was taken aback. "Can you guarantee the safety of my men?" His only concern was the well-being of his subordinates. He didn't want more of them to die.

Conrad nodded his head. "My name is Conrad, a commander of Last City. I guarantee that nothing will happen to your men as long as you follow me back to our territory."

"Ahhh!!! Help me!!! My leg! Ahhh!"

Senator Louie's screams irritated Conrad. He gave his men a look and they immediately understood his intentions. The two soldiers behind him grabbed the screaming Senator Louie and dragged him out of the way.

After the soldiers took him away, Conrad's expression eased up. "General, what is your choice?" He asked.

The old general sighed and nodded his head. "Alright."

Conrad escorted him to a flying car. When the car started levitating, the old general was stunned.

Conrad was sitting beside him so he quickly noticed the shock in the old general's expression. "This is a flying car and only our territory has them." He proudly stated.

"Your territory?" The old general turned his gaze towards Conrad. "Are you talking about this Last City that you mentioned?"

"That's right." Conrad nodded. "Our boss built the city in preparation for the zombie apocalypse. We managed to save hundreds of thousands of people. Compared to this shelter, the inhabitants in our territory didn't have to worry about food and other resources."

The old general was surprised to hear this. "You mean your boss was already aware of the zombie virus? Then why didn't he inform the world about it?"

Conrad chuckled and said. "Even if we inform the public that there would be a zombie apocalypse, would anyone believe it?"

The old general's mouth twitched. For sure, no one would believe it.

The two chatted along the way and their main topic was related to Last City. When the old general asked Conrad about his boss, the latter merely smiled and didn't say anything.

"Just what kind of godly person is your boss?" The old general became curious about the leader of Last City.

"We are almost there, general." Conrad said as he pointed at the island beneath them.

Brigadier General Antonio looked through the window and stared at the island. "This is your territory?" He was amazed by the structure of the city. It was built like a fortress and with its location in the middle of the ocean, no zombies could get close to it. This was the perfect place in the apocalypse.

The flying car landed in front of the biggest mansion in the city.

The old general looked around and saw dozens of soldiers wearing exoskeleton armor. They were like an army from the future! He could also tell that these soldiers were elite warriors who had been through numerous wars. 'What a powerful team!' He exclaimed in his heart.

"General, let's go." Conrad said before he stepped out of the car. The old general silently followed him.

"Commander!" The soldiers saluted when they saw Conrad. Their loud and clear voice was like the clap of thunder that reverberated in the old general's ears.

"The boss is waiting for you inside. Please follow me." Conrad told him.

"Alright. Lead the way."

Conrad escorted the old general inside the mansion and directly brought him to Arlan's study.

When they entered the room, the old general saw a young man who seemed to be in his mid-twenties. He had a pair of sword-like eyebrows. His defined facial features made him look incredibly charming.

Arlan smiled at the old general and slowly rose to his feet. "Greetings, General Antonio. I'm Arlan Dominic Roa, the leader of this base. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Brigadier General Antonio was surprised when he found out that the leader of Last City was actually such a young person. After recovering from his shock, he grabbed Arlan's outstretched hand and lightly shook it. "The pleasure is mine, sir." He uttered.

"Please take your seat first." Arlan said while pointing at the seat in front of his desk.

The old general nodded. He took his seat and observed Arlan. "What do you want from me, sir?" He asked in a low voice.

Arlan smiled. "You are indeed a direct person, general. This will make things easier for the both of us. I know that you were only forced to work for Senator Louie. Because of this, many of your men died unjustly, but I will give you a chance to atone for your mistakes." His face turned serious when he mentioned the last sentence.

The old general didn't say anything and he seemed to be in deep thought.

"General, if I didn't know about your character, I would have already ordered my men to kill your subordinates, but I decided to give you another chance." Arlan's voice was cold when he said this. The person who suggested to spare the old general was Lieutenant General Rivera. Both were once comrades in arms and they also shared a deep friendship.

"What do you want me to do?" The old general asked while looking at him.

"I want you to work for me." Arlan replied in a calm voice.

The old general took a deep breath and he tried to see through Arlan's intentions, but the latter was like a still lake. His face didn't show any fluctuations.

"General, there is no need to fight amongst ourselves. Our enemies are the zombies and the evolved creatures. We need to work together to survive in this harsher new world." Arlan added.

"What about my men?" He asked.

"They will receive the same treatment as the normal soldiers in Last City. If they want to earn more benefits, they have to perform well." Arlan answered.

The old general heaved a sigh of relief. "In that case, I'm willing to work for you, sir!" He stood up and bowed at Arlan.
