Growing Fond of You, Mr Nian

Jiang Yuning looked at her with his wide eyes and innocent gaze. “You won’t understand even if I tell you. You will understand when you have a boyfriend.”

He lowered his head and focused on searching for the computer chip again; what he really wanted to do though was get back to his room to help do Nian Xi’s laundry.

“I know.” He Xin looked at his defined features and gorgeous profile; she wished time would stand still forever.

She thought that if she had stayed beside him quietly and supportively, the two of them would eventually end up together. They had so many things going for them: encouragement from their families, similar professions, endless common interests.

“Even if you have a girlfriend, you still need friends…”

“I can,” Jiang Yuning replied without glancing up. “I never had friends before anyway; I think I’m quite all right with this arrangement.”

“And I’m not your friend?” He Xin was crestfallen.

“I don’t know.” Jiang Yuning paused to consider her question before he answered frankly, “Apart from research topics and academic-related things, I don’t wish to talk about other things with you. He Xin, I don’t know why you’re so hung up over this issue. We’ve talked about this several times. I’m swamped. I have to do my research every day, eat, sleep, daydream, and spend time with my girlfriend. If you are so free, you should think about how you can complete the experiment trial you are involved in. I finally understand why your robot project failed; you’ve just got too much free time on your hands.”

“I”m not…” He Xin was stumped for words after hearing him say that.

She never dared to confess her feelings for him because she knew how inept he was at social interactions.

“I put things back in their original positions for you.” Jiang Yuning stood up, “Now, I have to go back and do Xixi’s laundry for her.”

He Xin said, “We haven’t seen each other in so long. I have many other questions to ask you; I need some advice. Can you go back a little later…”

“No can do.” Jiang Yuning shook his head firmly. It was the first time Nian Xi had come over to spend the night. He wanted to spend more time with her. How could he waste precious time with He Xin? It wasn’t even something he wanted to figure out anyway.

He Xin was enraged as her chest rose and fell, “You’re letting your romantic relationship take precedence over your friendship.”

“Isn’t that normal?” Jiang Yuning turned to walk away without even looking back. He Xin was furious. How on earth did she fall in love with someone so thick?

Jiang Yuning knocked on the door of the bedroom before going in nervously.

Nian Xi’s knitted cardigan was thrown aside; she was wearing a strappy camisole and playing with her phone on his bed. Perhaps it was because she was a cop. She had curves, and the black camisole and jeans looked flattering on her. Her neck, her hips to her toes, her lines were sexy, and she was exuding a wild charm.

It was as if someone had sucked out the air from the big room; Jiang Yuning found it challenging to breathe regularly.

“You’re back?” Nian Xi sat up when she heard him walk in, the corners of her mouth upturned. “That was pretty fast. I thought she was going to make you stay for a while more and ask you a few more research questions.”

Jiang Yuning was shocked, “How did you know?”

Nian Xi had a knowing look on her face, “I know plenty of things.”

“You are good, no wonder you’re a cop.” Jiang Yuning looked around the room nervously. He didn’t dare to stare at her exposed collarbones and her bare shoulders.

“I’m better at other things, do you want to try?” Nian Xi climbed out of bed, barefoot. She walked over to him on the wooden floor, her right hand gently caressing his cheeks. Her voice was raspy, and she was suggestive.

Jiang Yuning thought about that as she stroked his face, his cheeks were bright red and hot now, “I… I’ll do your laundry. Where did you leave your things?”
