Classless Reincarnation
59 Spying: CIA Style!
"Let's just enjoy the party, shall we?"
Ever since coming back, the Thunder Lord's attitude had changed completely. What had happened during that short duration?! But people barely had time to think about it.
That's when an army crashed the party!
They came out of nowhere, all adorning the same colors. Many couldn't help but cry in terrifyingly... unending laughter as they appeared.
"Pfftt-- Are they... soldiers?!"
Foxes erupted from the sidelines, flooding the entire venue. Metallic top hats, capes, and even the new Flame Mansion's business sigil were proudly displayed on their chests.
They were as silly as fluffy!
"Woo!" (The fox army is here!)
"Woo!" (Who let the foxes out! Master, hehe!)
Then in their mouths, they carried food platters with strange-looking food that seemed as light as crispy. Jack grinned as he saw the interest that it generated. Those were chips!
"Woo!" (Food, food, we bring food!)
The foxes would proudly declare, feeling like heroes. They brought the best stuff to the masses!-- Already salivating, knowing they'd get to eat a bunch later.
After the weird tension between the Lords, the furry creatures were a breath of fresh air. Not only were they so friendly, but just looking at them brought a smile to one's face.
This was especially true with how the foxes struggled with their clothes. Every other second they'd step on their own capes and-- TUMBLE! SLIP! CRASH! --
Then as they got up, they cutely frowned, only to regain their usual silly grins. So what if wearing clothes was hard... this was so FUN!
"Kid, how long have you been planning this?!" The Old Ghost whispered, shocked. This was a comedy routine to everyone else, but he understood the crazy deception!
Business with Henderson family? --> Putting the latter in the spotlight.
Lots of Fiery Foxes? --> Showing their silly side for people to let their guards down... and regulate the mood simultaneously?! It was so simple, yet terrifying at the same time!
Just as the Masquerade couldn't be going better, the Flame Lord was chatting with the Lords. The more she did, the stranger they felt.
Even after the deed, they'd glance at her, dazed...
"D-did she come to do small talk?! Of her own initiative?!"
"I-it seems like it. Should we be worried or glad? It doesn't seem like she's planning anything nefarious. Did motherhood change her?"
"She had children before...then again, back then was a different situation with the civil war and all. Still, I just hope Dawn City will survive the upcoming calamity...."
Jack heard so many discussions that he felt like the greatest spy.
Were the Lords careless in their discussions? Not at all! Whenever they wanted to share a topic ever so slightly sensitive, they'd put up sound-isolating Mana barriers.
Yet, he heard everything crystal clear, all because of a slight trick. He had bugged the "napkins" that came in with the chips with the Old Ghost's help. #CIA tactics for the win!
The many big shots here knew to check their food for poison, but they had been so focused on it that they had utterly missed this simple trick!
'Go on, keep talking. Reveal more secrets!'
Hitting on someone? âœ"ï¸
Shit-talking behind their back? âœ"ï¸
Faction leaders getting chummy? âœ"ï¸
Some guy planning an assassination? âœ" Wait... WHAT?!
Jack suddenly felt like his head would explode. An assassination?! At HIS Masquerade?! This would screw up this friendly reputation they were going for!
There were two would-be assassins:
"Remember to plant the evidence. As long as we can drive a rift between the Lords, this City will inevitably fall. Then, the Underground will rise once more thanks to the confusion."
"Tch-- Do you think I'm an amateur? I got us those Masquerade invites, didn't I? Stop busting my balls and wait for the good news. They'll be killing each other after this."
The Underground again?! Why did it have to be those meddlesome bastards again?! Except, this time would be different. This time, he wouldn't be the one hunted!
Even now, Jack was still in the Flame Lord's arms.
Without waiting, he held his breath. 1..2...5...80...300... Holy shit, what was up with this baby body of his?! He sure had come a long way! Still, he eventually turned blue...
"Whaaaa!" He erupted in a Masquerade-Shattering scream.
"J-Jack, are you alright?! What happened?!" But just as the Flame Lord was getting worried, the cause was "revealed,"... and it STUNK!
He had shit himself?! Instantly, a reliable fox rushed forward to handle the delicate situation, everyone else giving understanding smiles.
"Woo!" (Worry not, Mistress, I got it!)
Before anyone could protest, fox and baby were already gone. At this moment, Jack couldn't help but grin gloatingly at his Ghost Mentor.
"See, didn't a tell you that a Stink-Cloud spell would come in handy! Now, we have a few minutes before anyone gets worried about us. Time to get to work!"
"Woo!" (What game are we playing now?!)
Jack didn't take long to gather his "troops" as he explained the thorny situation they were in.
"We need to save someone... but we have to make it look like an accident!" Jack stressed the last part.
After much deliberation, he wouldn't stop the assassination attempt. After all, the Underground would just try again later without anyone knowing better.
No, they would thwart their plan at the very last second, busting them in the act! This would give the Lords a common enemy; he could use that! Thus he quickly briefed them.
"Do you guys all know what you need to do?!"
"Woo!" (Yes, Master!)
"Good, now disperse!" With his command, the foxes all returned back to the Masquerade, ready to put on the silliest display of "inadvertent" heroics ever.
Thanks to their status as temporary "waiters", they quickly spread all across the room, soon becoming the best undercover bodyguards ever!
As for their protection target... it was a young man who just happened to be the favorite Nephew of the Water Lord.
The kid was happily flirting with the opposite sex, showcasing the most gorgeous of water-party tricks. He looked like a prick, sounded like a prick, but he'd be perfect bait!
"Ah, the naivety of youth," Jack stared at the youngster, expecting the show that would soon follow. This would be hella fun...
